TheScientificWorld ANSWERS: Aims, Scope and Policies

Who is TheScientificWorld?

TheScientificWorld currently publishes peer-reviewed journals for biomedical, life, and environmental sciences. The journals have editorial processes and structures designed to capture the benefits of the Internet - offering rapid review and immediate global dissemination. It retains the essential criteria for peer review and quality, while embracing the power of information access, navigation, and management needed by scientists today.

TheScientificWorldJOURNAL has a multidisciplinary structure and comprises a set of overlapping publishing Domains. Each Domain is equivalent to a journal. The journals are built for the electronic environment, allowing for multimedia, unlimited color and length, linking and advanced search and retrieval as well as immediate publication.

Upon acceptance, all published research is made immediately available to the worldwide scientific community through TheScientificWorld's website. See Table of Contents.

What is a Domain?

TheScientificWorldJOURNAL is organized as a matrix of overlapping Domains, which are similar to conventional journals. Each Domain is focused on a scientific discipline, process, approach, or community. Domains have Editorial Boards of Principal Editors, Associate Editors, and Editorial Board Members. Editors may serve on multiple Domains according to expertise.

What makes TheScientificWorldJOURNAL unique is that articles are simultaneously published in ALL relevant Domains. This gives authors' work exposure to all relevant audiences.

Some Domains are organised into Clusters, some of which are available for separate subscription.

Who are the Editors and what do they do?

TheScientificWorld now has over 700 prominent scientists acting as Principal Editors, Associate Editors and Editorial Board Members.

The Editors are responsible for setting and maintaining the high scientific standards of TheScientificWorld and for the editorial development of the Journal and its Domains. Editors also play an essential role in establishing Journal policies and ensuring that it meets the emerging needs of scientists today.

The majority of the Editors are specially invited, although we do welcome applications from senior scientists wishing to join the Editorial Network.

What subjects are covered?

The scope of TheScientificWorld includes all aspects of the biomedical, life and environmental sciences. For more detailed information, please browse via Domains.

Is There coverage by abstracting and indexing services?

Yes. TheScientificWorldJOURNAL is currently covered by PubMed (Index Medicus, MEDLINE and TOXLINE), Google Scholar, Science Citation Index, Biological Abstracts, EMBASE, GEOBASE, SCOPUS (and other Elsevier Bibliographic Databases), BIOSIS Previews, CAB Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts, CrossRef, and other services. See full list

What is the author copyright policy?

Authors of articles published with TheScientificWorld retain copyright of their work. See 'How to Submit' for further details about our policies.

What is the article archiving policy?

Articles published with TheScientificWorld will be immediately archived by the British Library's Legal Deposit for independent posterity and offered to other public online libraries and organizations for archiving.

What is the 'Open Choice' policy?

Our 'Open Choice' policy means authors are given a choice.

1. Authors can elect to publish for free, i.e. the costs associated with peer-review, copy-editing and PDF and HTML production services will be covered by TheScientificWorld.
2. Authors can elect to pay for publication of their peer-reviewed article, in which case TheScientificWorld will make such papers available free of charge to the scientific community on TheScientificWorld's web site under the Open Choice program.

Whichever route is chosen, peer-review is equally rigorous since referees have no knowledge of an author's preference.

Why does the pricing for Open Access vary?

Unlike most other open access publishers, TheScientificWorld charges open access fees on a sliding scale. The payment of a fee is related to the number of pages of the published article. In this way, we can pass on savings on the cost of production of shorter articles to benefit our authors.

The full text of papers will be made accessible to all users of TheScientificWorld's web site in PDF and, occasionally, HTML formats. For further information, see details of the Open Choice policy.

Can my institute receive the right to publish all papers with open access?

Yes, your institute, laboratory or department can subscribe to the TSW Open Access Waiver (OAW), which means that your colleagues can publish unlimited numbers of peer-reviewed and accepted articles with open access.

Your institute can also opt to become a TSW Charter Member, which offers OAW and subscription access to restricted papers. See 'here' for more details.

Can I apply to join as an Editor or Referee?

Applications to join TheScientificWorld Editorial Network are welcomed. Please indicate which Domain(s) you are qualified to join and outline what contributions to science you might have made, and your areas of expertise. We expect our Editorial Network to support the Journal by submitting articles and promptly refereeing other contributors' manuscripts. Please send your CV and all direct inquiries to editor@thescientificworld.com or join online at http://www.thescientificworld.com/SCIENTIFICWORLDJOURNAL/editors/joineditors.asp?jid=0

Is There an 'impact factor'?

TheScientificWorld strives to maintain the highest scientific standards through full and efficient peer review of articles. TheScientificWorldJOURNAL has been selected from 2005 by Thomson Scientific (formerly the Institute for Scientific Information) for its Journal Citation Report and Science Citation Index, etc. that will issue an Impact Factor for the Journal (starting from 2007 to be published in 2008). The Journal is also indexed by all other major literature databases.

TheScientificWorld also embraces moves towards new measures and criteria for quality, influence, and usage at the article level enabled by the digital medium. For example, the citation of individual articles can be seen on Scholar.Google.

Is TheScientificWorld a member of COUNTER?

Yes, we support all initatives that offer our customers, readers and authors a better way of assessing the usefulness of a journal, including COUNTER. COUNTER is an organization that sets standards and protocols governing the recording and exchange of online usage data.

TheScientificWorld ANSWERS: Author Services

How do I publish my research with TheScientificWorld?

For full details, see 'Submit an Article' and Instructions to Authors.

Why should I publish with TheScientificWorld?

TheScientificWorld publishes journals that maintain high standards of peer-review imposed by its Editorial Network of prominent scientists acting as Editors, Editorial Board Members and Referees. Authors reach a much broader audience through TheScientificWorld than through specialised journals. The unique overlapping Domain structure means your article is available to all relevant audiences.

As well as prompt, critical peer-review once revised and accepted the articles are published rapidly within one week. Direct indexing and abstracting in a number of databases, including PubMed - featuring direct linking to your article - means ready access to readers. TheScientificWorldJOURNAL is indexed by the Scholar Google project, which means users, can link directly from search results to your article's page on TSWJ's web site. Articles are also indexed by CrossRef.

Authors retain copyright of their work. Authors may elect to publish for free without any submission or page-charges or may publish on Open Access through TheScientificWorld’s innovative “Open Choice” policy. There is no set limit on the amount of color or type of material that can be published.

What types of articles can I submit?

You may submit a wide range of article types, ranging from research articles, letters and commentaries to short communications, methods and protocol papers, to mini reviews, dynamicREVIEWS and full reviews. View sample articles.

I have multimedia data; can I publish it in TheScientificWorld?

Yes, you can. Extensive picture archives, videos and sound recordings may be published and hosted either by TheScientificWorld directly or at your site with a link to the primary article.

Can I submit work that I have already published elsewhere?

In line with most other scientific journals TheScientificWorld journals only publish original manuscripts. Manuscripts are considered for publication on the understanding;

1. that they are not under consideration for publication elsewhere;
2. that all authors have agreed to their submission; and
3. that they will not be published again in the same form, in any language, without the express consent of TheScientificWorld and without citing the original source.

As copyright holders, Authors are free to publish significant revisions to their work or sections of their work originally published with TheScientificWorld providing the original source is cited. Authors are, however, encouraged to publish revisions to their work with TheScientificWorld.

TheScientificWorld will consider for publication papers that have been submitted to electronic pre-print archives. Authors must ensure that a link is made from the preprint server article to the published article.

There is no press embargo and authors are encouraged to publicise their work prior to publication in TheScientificWorld.

To whom do I submit my article?

In pursuit of a more user-friendly service-conscious modus operandi, TheScientificWorld TSW employs in-house peer-review systems in order to offer authors a personalized and efficient service. Instructions to Authors are available and you may also download a PDF version for your reference.

All manuscripts, including text, figures, and a cover letter, should be submitted via our electronic submission form. Please make sure to login prior to submitting a manuscript. Please see 'How to Submit' for further details.

If you are thinking about submitting a review article, please contact (editor@thescientificworld.com) for assistance.

How does the editorial review process work?

On receipt, we will convert your manuscript into PDF format for peer-review. Authors should select the Domain most relevant to the research reported. The PDF manuscript is then forwarded to the Principal or Associate Editor of the chosen Domain, who together with editorial staff assigns reviewers.
Reviewers are drawn from Domain Editorial Boards, but also a growing network of scientists acting as referees. There is a ten-day guideline for return of referee reports, and the decision to accept or reject publication is taken by the Principal or Associate Editor.

Is copy-editing and language editing provided?

Yes. TheScientificWorld offers a free, light copy editing service for consistency and errors in grammar and spelling.

Copyediting for language improvement is not normally included. Our author services team will provide a list of recommended professional science editors for authors wishing to have their manuscripts language-edited. Authors must contact the Services directly. All arrangements concerning services and fees are made between the author and Service and are independent of TheScientificWorld.
TheScientificWorld is not party to or liable for any arrangements or transactions related to these services.

In what electronic formats will my article appear?

A PDF file of each article will be available to authors and readers for downloading and printing for personal use. The full text of articles may be published in HTML with individual references within the article linked to individual article abstracts (via PubMed) or to the full article (via CrossRef) where available. Please ask the publisher for details.

Our Author Services team will as part of the publication process also create XML of your article for indexing purposes and to ensure that its content is promoted to all relevant audiences.

How should my article be referenced?

Example:

Havens, K.E. and East, T.L. (2006) Plankton food web responses to experimental nutrient additions in a subtropical lake. TheScientificWorldJOURNAL 7, 827–833. DOI 10.1100/tsw.2007.176.

Note: We do not assign issue numbers since articles are published continuously

Will my article have a DOI?

Yes. Articles are assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). The Digital Object Identifier (http://www.doi.org) is the emerging standard for citation and retrieval in the web environment. The location of articles coded by DOI are registered and constantly updated. Revised review articles will adopt the DOI of the earlier review in order for readers always to be directed initially to the latest version. Earlier versions will, in the interests of scholarship, be linked to the subsequent versions.

How soon will my article appear after acceptance?

The Editors and Referees and TheScientificWorld all share the aim and responsibility of processing your article fairly and rapidly. The Editors ask that you too respond rapidly to requests for revisions, and we ask you to check the electronic proof extremely rapidly. The trouble-free, perfect paper could be revised and published in a matter of days.

How will you promote my article?

We aim to promote your article through the facility to search and browse through table of contents, through several leading abstracting and indexing services and through alerting services especially Scolar Google and PubMed. The table of contents and search results show the title, authors, journal, page range, publication date, article type, handling editor, list of domains, and the synopsis. The article detail page includes in addition the DOI, ‘article clouds’, keywords, the abstract and the ability to post a blog and to read other blogs if any have been posted.

In addition, we encourage authors to submit names of individuals to whom we may directly promote the article. If you think the article is newsworthy, please tell us (editor@thescientificworld.com) - your article may be featured on the Journal’s news page.

How can I promote my article?

A better way to help is to inform your colleagues and peers that you have just published with TheScientificWorld and encourage them to consider publishing with TSW. The best way to help is to cite the article in as many articles you can, including those of your colleagues.
